HackerRank Tracks Hotkeys. Companion Mode Still Works.

July 30, 2026 (1d ago)

HackerRank's downloadable interview tool can log hotkey usage on your machine. Interview Solver Companion mode with remote controls still bypasses that—unlike competitors that only offer local hotkeys.

What changed with HackerRank interviews

A lot of HackerRank interviews no longer run in a plain browser tab. Candidates install a downloadable interview tool, and that tool can log keyboard shortcuts on the machine where the interview happens.

That matters if you use an AI interview copilot. Most of those tools only work when you press hotkeys on the interview computer. If HackerRank is watching those keystrokes, the log will show them.

Browser-only "cheat detection" was already limited. A downloadable proctoring tool is a different problem: it can see more than tab focus and in-browser shortcuts.

Why local hotkeys get you flagged

Typical interview copilots depend on keys like Ctrl+1 or Ctrl+Esc on the laptop you're sharing. That works against browser assessments that can't see OS-level input. It does not help when the platform installs software that records hotkey usage on that same laptop.

If the only way to capture the problem or ask for a solution is a local hotkey, you're stuck choosing between no help and a suspicious key log.

Companion mode with remote controls

Interview Solver Companion mode pairs the desktop app with any phone, tablet, or second browser. From that device you can:

  • Trigger a screenshot of the interview window
  • Toggle voice transcription
  • Send prompts and read answers
  • Keep the interview machine focused on HackerRank the whole time

The controls live on a separate device. You don't need to press the tracked hotkeys on the computer HackerRank is monitoring.

That is the gap competitors miss. Tools that only ship local hotkeys, or a "second screen" with no remote controls, still force key activity onto the interview machine. Companion mode does not.

How to run a HackerRank interview this way

  1. Install Interview Solver on your interview computer and log in.
  2. Open Companion and connect your phone or tablet with the session code or QR code.
  3. Confirm you can trigger screenshot and voice from the companion device before the interview starts.
  4. During the interview, leave HackerRank focused. Capture problems and request help from the companion device.
  5. Read solutions on the companion screen. Type the code yourself in the HackerRank editor.

Practice the flow once. The point is zero unnecessary key combos on the monitored machine.

What this means vs other interview tools

If a tool's pitch stops at "undetectable hotkeys," ask what happens when the platform logs those hotkeys. Local shortcuts alone are not enough for downloadable proctoring.

Interview Solver still includes OS-level hotkeys for normal Zoom/Teams browser interviews. For HackerRank sessions that install a desktop tracker, Companion remote controls are the path that does not leave hotkey noise in the log.

Competitors without companion remote controls do not have that option.

Getting started

  1. Download Interview Solver (Mac or Windows)
  2. Open Companion and pair a second device at the companion page
  3. Run a mock HackerRank-style session and practice screenshot + prompts from your phone

If your next round uses HackerRank's downloadable interview tool, set this up before interview day—not during it.
